Kamei—A 15 year-old Brazilian genius

I wonder what I was doing when I was 15.

Um, no, I wasn't really writing yet.

Working ou...nahh.

Hmm.

Uhh.

Ah, there. I was playing my video games.

That's me turning into a raccoon with a mustache and flying with the clouds.

Fun.

Lucas Hideki Kamei, on the other hand--the sick, unassuming, little, homeboy-overraised-by-his-parents wunderkind you see just below this paragraph of jealousy--does something entirely different for fun. Disco, french house, funk, you name (some of) it, the Brazilian kid has sampled it. Pretty impressive for 15 years of age. I guess the only gray area for me is how he applies his effects. His beat grid goes off too much at times. The stuttering, looping, and flanger combo doesn't always make for a legit solo or breakdown. But the track "Hot" still explodes nevertheless. A hot start masterminded with booming finesse. Kamei, everyone.

Mayer Hawthorne

After months of disregard, I finally got my ears on Mayer Hawthorne's debut LP "A Strange Arrangement" and I am telling you, he is the rightful soul fool of '09. All chiller, no filler record that revisits all the great things about soul: subtle-gentle grooves, lyrical vulnerability...all the purgatory-like yearning. It's a quiet storm, blessed by (but in no way superior to) the likes of Issac Hayes and Al Green. There's even a bit of a rehashed doowop influence thrown in the mix as a bonus quirk. Best thing of all, he doesn't try too hard. Because you can never really force soul.

Do further research on the Michigan native here.
