Thundercat, The Mutant Bass Cat

“I do believe that hip-hop can be the new jazz, and I’m helping create that."

Only Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner has the chops to say such a thing. His entire jam-style slant to his music isn't something you hear everyday, especially in the offbeat Flying Lotus genre. Producers usually craft everything through a computer -- which isn't the least bit terrible -- but this guy finds a way to include a lot of raw bass. Lots of wild but controlled bassing around. Jams, jams, and more of jams. The result really is something.

His resume does boast a few interesting things as well, such as the fact that he's jammed with the heavy-weighing likes of Flying Lotus himself and even Snoop Dogg. I just have all possible thumbs up for this guy.

His LP's due August 29. Meanwhile...

The mix is just supreme. It's a delicate display of their 80s references. Most of the tracks are rare vinyl gems, balanced out with a bit of Tears For Fears and the more modern likes of Princeton.

The synths obviously punch away on this one but they're no better than the OBESE claps underneath the skanky club feel. Again, a bit crazy. Very Jersey Shore (in a respectable way?). Kind of went Guetta on a few breakdowns but that's okay; Calvin Harris hardly overdoes anything he puts out for us to bang our heads to. Ahyeah. Ahyeah.

To the 2-3 readers of this blog, I would rather eat nails than lose you—hence, this post.

So yeah, it's hard to be subtle with a remix like this, since anything from The Twelves sounds like a golden bobcat moaning in the forest. They just always stand out. They always give you a good time.

And with their latest, The Twelves waste no time in displaying their classic touches. The cut is a darting nu-disco gem filled with synths that stab their way into the mix perfectly. It's a soundtrack to a heist. Funk? Heaps of it, Brazilian-style. Note the band-like arrangement on this one as well. The raw claps and quality percussion make everything sound more like a studio jam than the usual analog manipulation.

The Drums. Another "The" band? Nope. Just no, really. The reverb, man. The deliberate, unpolished feel. The second, third voicing. The 50s surf pop sensibilities. The 80s melodic pegs. The low-fat, stripped-down lyrics.

How can you not shell out hours of your day for this band?

New wave and basic 50s pop. Genre pair of the year right there. It's amusing how the future of music is rooted in something that started over half a century ago.

Speaking of "feelings", I feel that this is one of his most inspired productions. Remix holds its own as a complete warp-around of the original cut. It glows. It's a Shannon Brown dunk. It says, hey man the summer ain't done yet.

New Chromeo: Don't Turn The Lights On

The pros will always posterize the cons when it chromes down to Chromeo. But let's discuss them anyway.

Pros? I think the new track "Don't Turn The Lights On" was made for a cop undergoing some sort of nocturnal on-road dilemma -- do I go back to that brazen Lithuanian escort (duh female) I made eyes with at the bar or do I continue chomping on these fucking Bavarians til I get to the station (YES THIS IS MY SUGGESTION FOR THE MUSIC VID)? These midnight thematics are cemented even more with this dark pattern of synths that grind deeper to the devil knows where. Or maybe just under the bridge.

The sole con of this track is a medium-size one: the usual Chromeo-exclusive goosebumps were nowhere to be found. The chorus did not drip with any semblance of superiority over its preceding verses. I just felt that the chorus could have stood out a little bit more, but again, that's fine, lime. The song's a background-grinder made for hard-chilling bros who either look to the 80s for a good groove or own an '89 Sentra. I like it, but I don't love it yet. But I know it'll eventually grow the hell on me.

KIA Motors has shaken hands with Adult Swim (what the huck) to endorse a scroll of MPV ambiance-enhancing tunes for the regular, unsuspecting KIA Soul owner. Dubbed 8 Free Tracks, 8 Straight Weeks, the marketing ploy just dropped a Washed Out track this week, a cut that crawls with his usual ghostly take on chillwave. The track also features Caroline Polachek of Chairlift on vocal duties, and although I can smell a shtinky whiff of corporate selling out here, KIA still deserves a high-ten for looking at other types of audio bling for their cars. Plus, at least I get to hear new shit from Washed Out. And that's all that matters, right?

You know how some lo-fi records lure you with their wildshit album cover/title/title track, all interesting at first glance, then eventually disappoint upon first skim? Like you can feel its deliberate "subtle" indieness trying its hardest to win you over? You won't find all that on Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti's new LP "Before Today". Especially on tracks like "Beverly Kills" and "Can't Hear My Eyes", the overall feel is a revolving sushi bar of light new wave, 70s art rock, and some of that play-fi (sorry I just coined that shit now; it's tweaking the track's fidelity kid's playground-style). Overall verdict: mind blown to little rainbows. And that the hype was right this time. After a ridiculously persistent string of LPs and EPs, LA-based Ariel Pink should be eating grapes from a Slovenian slave right about now. Or, just enjoying all the backrubs he's getting from all the Neon Indians and Washed Outs in the area.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS ARE BACK: OLD SWAGGER, NEW ALBUM

Only Scott Weiland can wear a cowboy hat.

With that said, his new album with the reunited Stone Temple Pilots (boy does it feel odd typing those three words again after such a long time) just dropped today. And it's almost everything you expect from a band that went off the radar for more than a while: new-found energy, coupled with their signature torch of old-fashioned rock. It's rock that you might brand as typical, maybe, but Weiland's crooning is like this golden funnel that sets the band apart. Any guitar riff or solo that goes through Weiland's Funnel (sounds like a disease, a good one) comes out remarkable. I sense a bit of rust in the hit-making department, but Weiland has a knack for saving the most uncharismatic track. Overall, the new self-titled effort is a timely comeback that fans can certainly re-infatuate themselves with.

Weiland on the record:

"In the '90s, I was so overwhelmed with my heroin addiction, and so a lot of the stuff was just from my point of view. Now, I tend to look at some of the greats like Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. I look at their storytelling. I try to tell stories. Every song doesn't have to be narcissistically written about how I feel on that day."

Doubling a hip-hop track's original tempo has been the usual, predictable (I wouldn't say boring since you'd have the sped up track booming in your face) style for club DJs these days. Cassian's newest take on Drake's new single "Over", however, works a different route. Running on 76BPM, his hours-old remix somewhat retains the initial tempo, while delivering his signature recipe of homemade Australian synth.

First up this week: New York's The Rassle, which is what you get when The Virgins' former drummer Erik Ratensperger and one half of Young Lords, Reed and Blair Van Nort, decide to share lyrics notebooks. The collaboration hardly borrows from either band, though. Instead, we hear more straight-up rock 'n' roll--liberated anthem upon liberated anthem, exploding skyward into mushroom cloud oblivion.

Man, would you just check the blood pressure of this one? Untamed, but not nearly in the rave or techno manner. Australian friends Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP are at it again (previously for the track "Afro Nuts"), this time with a thumping mover of brassed-up house and a fun script of Italian allusions. The kick beats are also worth applauding on this one. They almost have this slight muffled effect cast on them. It's the tiniest detail of glory.

It goes without saying that Brazilian prodigy Kamei literally wanted a song from the other side of the globe: no rarer than Japanese hip-hop group Home Made Kazoku. And with the young Kamei at his signature helm, the song treads the shores of basic house, complete with a coastal feel of the daftest Daft Punk. I just can't believe the three gentlemen you see above are the owners of these voices I'm hearing in this song. Probably tweaked the hell out of it. But the song's a feel-best edit.

This is Florida's Surfer Blood, suggested by a good friend with good taste. The title track "Swim" is off their week-old LP Astro Coast, an aqueous package of pure surfer rock. The vocals remind you of Sparta's Jim Ward, but even more arena-ready. There's just a dusky texture to this punk foray that keeps you hitting repeat.

Throwback Time: Chromeo's Fancy Footwork

I don't mind obsessing over Chromeo's Fancy Footwork every chance I get. I mean, the record blew me away. It switched 2007 on. It brought electrofunk to a whole new building. The deluxe release wasn't so bad either as it included a hook-heavy track from Parisian Ed Banger resident DJ Mehdi. But you guys probably know the LP's title tracks all too well. "Fancy Footwork," "Momma's Boy," and "100%." Wild and introduction-proof. What I have here is the underrated "Opening Up (Ce Soir On Danse)." You just can't go wrong with that French outro. No can do. Okay, go ahead and see if you dig both.

Let's start with albums. 2009 brimmed with killer records, but I'd like to narrow them to just ten, each judged on its cohesive and adhesive qualities, as well as its straight-up greatness (a simple but important criteria hogger).

1. Boy Crisis - Tulipomania
What It Is: A relentless sled swirling inside a yellow tunnel of Newer Wave, Psychedelic, and Synth Pop in Brooklyn, New York.
Top Tracks: The Fountain of Youth, Dressed to Digress, Sex & Violence

2. Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement
What It Is: A warm cup of milk tea. Pure Soul, specifically the Quiet Storm era, plus an inspired sidedish of Doowop--all brought to you by Michigan native Hawthorne.
Top Tracks: Prelude, A Strange Arrangement... actually, everything down to the last track.

3. Chairlift - Does You Inspire You
What It Is: Every other shoegaze band out there today has taken most of their cues from this Brooklyn trio. So good. So weird and good.
Top Track: Planet Health, Le Flying Saucer Hat, and Bruises.

4. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillon
What It Is: Even before Pavilion came out, their records already set the benchmark for all things experimental and visua-delic. This record delivered even more of their signature strides.

5. Neon Indian - Psychic Chasms
What It Is: The stuff of dreams. Like hearing a painting.

Her lip-syncing of Womack's "Across 110th Street" towards the end was enough to cement an impression on me, much like what she did in the early 70s (Foxy Brown, Coffy, Cool Breeze, others). In the crime film Jackie Brown though, Tarantino took a similar 70s approach and brought Grier back to her explosive heydey. Watch out.

Belated pop discovery: Discovery, featuring Ra Ra Riot's Wes Miles and Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij. My xxx-rated verdict? Way better than the overrated Vampire Weekend. Tracks borrow from 'Riot's punk reflexes, while introducing pop and hip-hop beats that most of us are familiar with. The melodic sequences are a hit as well, especially in "So Insane".
